24-Year-Old Visually Impaired Woman Set to Become Kerala’s First Blind Judge

Thanya Nathan C., a 24-year-old woman from Kerala, is set to create history by becoming the state’s first fully visually impaired woman judge. Born with complete vision impairment, her journey stands as a powerful example of determination, inclusion, and equal opportunity in India’s justice system.

Despite being unable to read law books visually, Thanya pursued her legal education using Braille, screen readers, and assistive technology. She topped her LLB at Kannur University and later practiced law in Taliparamba, gaining hands-on experience in the legal field.

A landmark 2025 Supreme Court of India ruling, which ensured equal judicial opportunities for visually impaired candidates, paved the way for her selection. After successfully clearing the Kerala Judicial Service examination, Thanya’s achievement has emerged as a symbol of empowerment for persons with disabilities across the country.

Her inspiring journey highlights how accessibility, determination, and inclusive policies can help break long-standing barriers and reshape the future of India’s judiciary.
