In a landmark move aimed at strengthening access to education, the Kerala government has announced free education up to the graduation level in its Budget 2026. The historic decision was revealed by Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal while presenting the state budget in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
Under the new policy, students pursuing undergraduate courses in government and aided colleges will no longer be required to pay tuition fees. This step is expected to significantly ease the financial burden on thousands of families and ensure that higher education remains accessible to students from all socio-economic backgrounds.
The announcement reinforces Kerala’s long-standing commitment to education and social welfare. By removing financial barriers at the graduate level, the government aims to improve enrollment rates, reduce dropouts, and empower the state’s youth with better academic opportunities.
Education experts and student bodies have widely welcomed the decision, calling it a progressive reform that could set an example for other states across the country.
